Many important industrial processes use expensive PGM catalysts to selectively manufacture diverse products in the petrochemical industry, the organic chemical industry and commodity chemicals like nitric and acetic acid, all vital to the global economy. These specialized materials contain low concentrations of PGMs, and hence require a wide array of  technologies to recover the valuable metals to send them for recycle. Lockup or loss of even a small percentage of a PGM catalyst can affect the economic viability of a process.
